Description
Surprise! I also do costume props.
This is a fairly resent addition to my toy box. After seeing the AC3 reveal trailer long ago I did some blues as a guide to making the Tomahawk that the game’s main protagonist ‘Connor’ uses.
I started out by tracing the head of the axe to foam board and rough cut the bevels and edges, after drowning the foam board in resin I used bondo to finish the details. Same goes for the spike and collar. After assembly I used flat black primer and rust’olium aluminum paint to finish it.
The handle is made out of a length 1 by 2 about 18 inches long I had in the garage, after some research I found a hawk handle that was period correct so I hand carved the board into the correct shape with my pocket knife. I then Sanded and used some cherry stain to add some color.
After that I decided to attach the axe head with lashing instead of a nut or something. I used some red and black suede cord that I twisted as I wrapped to get the look I wanted.
The handle is made out of an old leather belt I found from a local thrift store, I hot glued it at the bottom to start then wrapped and attached it by hammering in some push tacks I got from Wal-Mart.
Then I Threw on some tan cord and then the beads and feathers I got from an old broken dream catcher I found at the same thrift store I found the belt at.
I added the diamond pattern in sharpie and will burn it in soon when I figure out what is wrong with my wood burning tool.
All and all I managed to do this with what I had on hand in about 2 weeks, and for about 22 bucks.
Major Photo update with a better camera, I added my old ball and cap pistol to the mix for giggles.
